How it works
Everything this guide does, in one list. What is on each screen, where it is and what you need to use it.
Looking is free. Using needs an account.
The whole guide reads without signing up: the 7 routes, the 164 stages with their profile and their services, the towns, the hostels and the prices. None of that asks for anything.
What needs an account are the services: the ones that do something for you — place you with your GPS, answer you, translate for you, keep your trip, warn you the night before. The free account is enough, it is free forever and it takes a minute.

The only thing you earn by walking
The pilgrim’s parchment
It certifies that you have walked a whole Way, or nearly. The Church does not grant it and it does not replace the Compostela: we grant it, and we grant it with the only thing this guide can truly certify — the stamps you have collected in places that exist and are on the map.
- You stamp at the shells. Hostels, bars, restaurants and shops with a membership carry a scallop shell with a code inside. Point your phone and choose: leaving, arriving or passing through. The credential stamp counts too, when you put it there by scanning a house's code: it stands for the start or the finish of that stage, depending on where the house is. One per stage, so no stage is completed without at least one shell.
- 37 stages from 2 Ways. You need 37 complete stages, adding up those of every Way you have walked, from at least 2 different Ways. No short Way has that many on its own: you have to combine two. Ways shorter than 300 km are walked whole or do not count.
- Four stamps per stage. Each complete stage carries 4 stamps: one on leaving in the morning, one on arriving in the afternoon and 2 more along the route, at 2 different houses. Two places twenty kilometres apart can only be stamped on foot, and the ones along the route separate those who walked from those who slept.
- The Santiago stage, complete. Among the complete stages must be the one that enters Santiago, with its four stamps. That one finishes the stamping. One thing remains.
- And the selfie in front of the cathedral. Take it on the Obradoiro, once the last stamp is in. That is the ending of the Way and it is what opens the parchment: you write your name, set the dates and a line of your own, and it can be seen and printed, with your face and the cathedral behind you.
Before that it cannot be seen, printed or downloaded. If it could be produced without being earned it would certify nothing, and then it would be worthless to those who did earn it. At the foot it carries a code so anyone can verify from outside that it is real.
