Blisters and feet

Almost nobody quits because of the climbs. People quit because of their feet, and blisters form on day one over things that take two minutes to prevent.

  • Break your boots in at home, not in Roncesvalles. A hundred kilometres before you set off, at least.
  • Half a size up from your city shoes: feet swell as you walk, and on the descents your toes hit the front.
  • Seamless socks, and no cotton. Cotton gets wet, stays wet and sands your skin.
  • The moment you feel a hot spot, stop. At that point there is no blister yet and a dressing is enough. Ten minutes later there is one.
  • If it has formed: needle and thread wiped with alcohol, pass it through, leave the thread inside so it drains, and cover it. Do not cut the skin off the top — that skin is the protection.
  • In the first-aid kit, little and good: blister dressings, cloth tape, gauze, ibuprofen, antiseptic and small scissors. Everything else you buy at the village pharmacy.
