Stage 5 · Camino Inglés
Hospital de Bruma → Sigüeiro
Before you set off
Nowhere to eat
Between Hospital de Bruma and Sigüeiro.
Downhill towards the Tambre
After the queen stage, this one is walked with some relief: 24.4 kilometres with 280 metres of ascent and 600 of descent, medium difficulty. It is a long, gentle descent from the high ground of Bruma to the Tambre valley, almost all on tarmac lanes among hamlets, meadows and woodland. There are few climbs and none of them serious.
The first kilometres pass close to Mesón do Vento, the only place with services in the first half; after that the route moves away from the road and runs through the parishes of Ordes, quiet and with little in the way of places to stop. It is the monotony of the tarmac, more than the gradient, that your legs will notice.
The second half livens up with more hamlets and the odd bar, and the finish enters Sigüeiro along the bank of the Tambre. Sigüeiro is a town with every service, already in the Santiago district, and the natural place to sleep the last night before you arrive.
Tips
Have breakfast and fill your bottle in Mesón do Vento if you make the detour: after that there is a long stretch without bars.
This is a tarmac stage: vary your pace, stop every two hours and look after your feet, which by now are feeling the road.
Get your stamp en route at any bar in the hamlets of the second half; the parchment asks for two stamps along the way.
If it is hot, start early: the stage has little shade on the open stretches of track.
In Sigüeiro get your arrival stamp and rest well: tomorrow you walk into Santiago.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

It checks GPS every 6 min while you keep it open. GPS drains the battery: if yours is low, switch it off.

The things that do not expire: where the fountain actually is, which bar opens at six, where not to go in the rain.
None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
