Stage 4 · Camino Inglés
Betanzos → Hospital de Bruma
Before you set off
Nowhere to eat
Between Betanzos and Hospital de Bruma.
The Queen Stage, up to Bruma
The longest and hardest stage of the Camino Inglés: 27.7 kilometres with 720 metres of ascent and only 300 of descent, high difficulty. You climb almost all day, not over one clear pass but in steps, through the rural parishes of the inland Betanzos district: Limiñón, Presedo, Vilacoba, Vizoño. This is village Galicia, with eucalyptus, meadows, hórreos and very few cars.
The problem is not the climbing but the services: after the first few kilometres bars become scarce and there are long stretches with nothing open, especially out of season. You need to set off with water and food, and plan your stop before you need it.
Hospital de Bruma is a handful of houses around the old pilgrims' hospital and the public hostel, up on the high ground. This is where the two branches of the Camino Inglés, from Ferrol and from A Coruña, come together. There is little beyond the hostel and a place or two to eat nearby; arriving with a booking or a plan is wise.
Tips
Leave at dawn. With 27.7 kilometres and a climb, every hour of daylight counts, and there is not much to do in Bruma if you arrive late.
Carry water for the whole stage and food for the road: there are fountains, but few bars are open and their hours are unpredictable.
Get your stamp en route in the first bars of the stage, in Limiñón or Presedo: further on you may not find another.
Book a bed in Bruma or look at nearby alternatives before you leave: there are few places and in summer they fill up.
If your legs are not up to it, the stage can be split: there is accommodation halfway along, in the intermediate parishes.
A long stage with very few services in its second half: set off with water and food for the whole day.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

Tips from people who walked it
The things that do not expire: where the fountain actually is, which bar opens at six, where not to go in the rain.
None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
