The Breamo Climb and the Mandeo

This is the stage that separates the stroll from the real Camino. It is 20.6 kilometres with 530 metres of ascent and 540 of descent, medium difficulty, and the hardest part comes right at the start: you leave Pontedeume up a long, steep climb towards Monte Breamo, with the ría dropping further and further below you. Best to tackle it while you are fresh, before the sun gets strong.

At the top the terrain eases: tracks among eucalyptus and the hamlets of Miño, with a descent to the beach area and then another climb. You cross the river Baxoi by the medieval bridge of Ponte do Porco and enter Paderne, where the route rolls along again on tarmac lanes and dirt tracks, with constant ups and downs that wear you out more than a single big climb.

The finish drops towards the Mandeo valley and enters Betanzos over its old bridge. Betanzos is a town with everything: squares, arcades, shops and good food. It is worth arriving in daylight to see it.

Tips

Leave early and have breakfast in Pontedeume: the Breamo climb on an empty stomach with the sun in your face is the worst part of the stage.

Miño has bars and shops halfway through: a good spot for a stamp en route and for filling your bottle.

The ups and downs of Paderne are on tarmac and track; vary your pace and go easy on your knees on the descents.

Stock up well in Betanzos: tomorrow is the longest day on the route and the one with the fewest services.

If you have time, the tortilla and the local wine are the town's tradition.

The climb up Monte Breamo is steep from the first kilometre: set off with water and without hurry.

Walk with me

It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
