Fene, the Shipyard and the Eume

A short stage with more ups and downs than it looks: 16.1 kilometres with 420 metres of ascent and about as much descent, in scattered climbs that never become hard. The difficulty is still low. You leave Neda along the riverside walk and soon climb towards Fene, between houses and tarmac lanes, with the shipyards of the ría in view.

Beyond Fene the route heads into rural parishes: Perlío, Magalofes, tracks among eucalyptus and hamlets with hórreos, with the odd fountain along the way. It is the first stretch that feels like the Camino rather than the city, although it never strays far from the road.

The final descent brings you to Cabanas, with its beach and pine grove by the sea, and from there you cross the long bridge over the Eume estuary into Pontedeume. It is a medieval town of steep streets and arcades, with plenty of places to eat and sleep.

Tips

Fene has bars, a pharmacy and shops: it is the place for a mid-morning stop, and you can get a stamp while you are at it.

Carry water from Fene. There are fountains between Magalofes and Cabanas, but not all of them run all year round.

The beach at Cabanas is an invitation to stop; in good weather it is the best rest of the stage, before the bridge.

The Eume bridge is long and has no shade. In wind or rain, cover up before you step onto it.

Get your arrival stamp in Pontedeume the same day: the hostel and the churches close early.

Walk with me

It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
