Walking into Santiago

The last stage is short and kind: 16.2 kilometres with 260 metres of ascent and 180 of descent, low difficulty. You leave Sigüeiro across the Tambre and the route runs for a good while through woodland and along dirt tracks, quietly, until the city begins to show itself at the Tambre industrial estate and the first streets.

The urban approach is long and busy with traffic, though the excitement makes it go quickly. You enter from the north of the city, along the rúa do Camiño Inglés, and the streets run downhill towards the old town until they open onto Obradoiro square, in front of the cathedral. This is a moment to take slowly.

Santiago has the Pilgrim's Office, where you apply for the Compostela with your stamped credential, and everything else besides: it is a big city, with services at any hour. The stage ends in the square, but the Camino ends when you decide it does.

Tips

Get your departure stamp in Sigüeiro before crossing the bridge: the final stage of the parchment needs its four stamps like all the others.

Get a stamp en route at a bar on the way into the city, and your arrival stamp at the cathedral or at the Pilgrim's Office, which also stamps.

The Pilgrim's Office has queues in high season; if you arrive mid-morning, go there first and then to the square.

The pilgrims' mass is at midday in the cathedral; backpacks are not allowed inside, and there are left-luggage lockers nearby.

The selfie in front of the cathedral with your last stamp in place is the one that unlocks your parchment: take it calmly.

Walk with me

It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
