Stage 28 · Camino del Norte
Lourenzá → Abadín
Before you set off
Nowhere to eat
Between Lourenzá and Abadín.
Mondoñedo and the climb to Abadín
A stage of 25.3 kilometres with 720 metres of ascent and 480 of descent, moderate difficulty, which lifts you from the Lourenzá valley onto the plateau of the Terra Chá. You set off on tracks between hamlets and a first short rise to Arroxo, then drop to Mondoñedo, which appears an hour and a half into the walk. It is a small and beautiful episcopal city, with its cathedral, its arcaded square and bars and shops to spare: the obligatory stop of the day, and the place to stock up.
After Mondoñedo the serious work begins: the long climb to the ridge that separates A Mariña from the Terra Chá, on dirt and tarmac tracks among oaks, chestnuts and hamlets set ever higher, Lousada and Maariz among them. It is not steep, but it never seems to end, and in the heat it wears you down. At the top the landscape opens out and changes: flat meadows, stone walls, cattle, a great deal of sky.
The last kilometres descend gently through Gontán to Abadín, already on the Terra Chá. It is a small roadside village with just enough to eat and sleep. There is little to see, but you arrive with your legs rested thanks to that final descent.
Tips
Have breakfast and shop in Mondoñedo: after the city there is nothing reliable before Gontán.
Leave early in summer: the climb after Mondoñedo is long and is in full sun by mid-morning.
Carry water for the whole climb; some hamlets have fountains, but not all of them run.
The cathedral in Mondoñedo gives stamps and is worth a visit; go in before the climb, not on the way back.
Leaving Mondoñedo there are two routes, the traditional one by Lousada and the one along the road: Lousada is longer but far quieter.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

It checks GPS every 6 min while you keep it open. GPS drains the battery: if yours is low, switch it off.

The things that do not expire: where the fountain actually is, which bar opens at six, where not to go in the rain.
None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
