The flat Terra Chá to Vilalba

An easy stage with no hills: 20.8 kilometres with 220 metres of ascent and 330 of descent, easy. You leave Abadín along the road and soon take tracks between meadows and stone walls, in the flat, open landscape of the Terra Chá that gives the district its name. You pass through small hamlets, Castromaior and Martiñán among them, with hórreos, cruceiros and stone houses, and over a medieval bridge across the river Batán.

The going alternates dirt track, the tarmac of local roads and stretches of corredoira between oaks, always level, with the odd stream ford and several footbridges. There is a village bar or two around the midpoint, but not many, and for the most part you walk alone. The kilometres go quickly and you can be in Vilalba in time for lunch.

The last kilometres are tracks between scattered houses and tarmac into Vilalba from the east. Vilalba is the capital of the Terra Chá and has everything: the Andrade tower, now a parador, streets full of shops, pharmacies and supermarkets. It is the best place for many kilometres to replace whatever you are missing.

Tips

Carry water from Abadín: fountains are scarce and the village bars open when they open.

In the rain the corredoira sections turn to mud and the streams rise; wear shoes that can take it and be careful at the fords.

Get a stamp along the way at any village bar you find open; the parchment asks for two route stamps as well as departure and arrival.

Vilalba has everything and city opening hours: a good place to shop and to rest for a whole afternoon.

Walk with me

It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
