Rivers and tracks of the Terra Chá

Another flat, short stage across the Terra Chá: 19.8 kilometres with 260 metres of ascent and 280 of descent, easy. You leave Vilalba to the south-west and cross the river Magdalena on a medieval bridge, and from there walk on tarmac and dirt tracks between meadows, oak woods and hamlets of scattered houses, with the motorway close by for a good while.

It is a linking stage, quiet, without hills and without great views, and the best of it is the rivers: the route crosses several of them, with old bridges and shaded stretches beside the water. The hamlets, San Xoán de Alba among them, have hardly any services, so your stop depends on whether you find a bar open or not. You pass under the motorway and the railway line a couple of times.

Baamonde is reached on track and local road, beside the main road. It is a crossroads and a small village, with the church of Santiago, its Romanesque doorway and a centuries-old chestnut tree beside it, and just enough to eat and sleep. It is best to arrive with what you need already bought.

Tips

Buy in Vilalba whatever you are going to need in Baamonde: there is very little there and it keeps short hours.

Carry water for the whole stage and do not count on the village bars, which open when they open.

The track sections beside the motorway are noisy but safe; the local road crossings need attention.

It is short and flat: set off unhurried and arrive for lunch, because there is not much to do in Baamonde in the afternoon.

Walk with me

It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
