Stage 31 · Camino del Norte
Baamonde → Miraz
San Alberte and the solitude of Miraz
A short and lonely stage: 15.3 kilometres with 330 metres of ascent and 180 of descent, easy. It is the first day of the emptiest section of the Camino del Norte, between Baamonde and Sobrado, and you notice it from the start. You leave Baamonde along the road and within a few kilometres reach the chapel of San Alberte, beside its medieval bridge over the river Parga, in a corner of woodland that invites you to stop even though it is early.
From there the route climbs gently on dirt and tarmac tracks among oak woods, pine woods and meadows, past hamlets of a few houses, Seixón and Carballedo among them, where you should not expect an open bar. Granite begins to break through the pasture and the landscape grows wilder as you gain height. For most of the day you walk alone and in silence.
Miraz is a granite hamlet up on the height, with the church, the hostel and very little else. The stage ends early, and the best thing is to take it as an afternoon of rest: read, wash your clothes and talk to the few pilgrims who arrive.
Tips
Short though it is, carry water: between Baamonde and Miraz there are no reliable bars and few fountains.
Set off after breakfast in Baamonde, without hurrying; you reach Miraz around midday.
In the rain the dirt tracks turn to mud; the going is easy, but your shoes will be grateful for the care.
In Miraz get a stamp at the hostel or the church: they are almost the only options in the village.
There are no shops between Baamonde and Miraz, and hardly anywhere to buy anything in Miraz: carry food for supper and for the next day.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
