Stage 32 · Camino del Norte
Miraz → Sobrado dos Monxes
Before you set off
No water, no food
From kilometre 0.0 to 9.2. — Leave with 1.7 litres of water.
Granite, silence and the monastery
This is the most isolated stage on the Camino del Norte: 25.2 kilometres with 420 metres of ascent and 350 of descent, moderate difficulty. You leave Miraz on a track and the route soon climbs among granite boulders, heather and pine woods, over open and sometimes stony ground that is among the finest of the Galician section. The high point of the stage comes in the first half, with wide views on clear days and wind almost always.
After that you pass through hamlets of a few houses, A Roxica, A Cabana, Marcela, linked by dirt and tarmac tracks, and cross into the province of A Coruña. There are very few people and practically nothing open for many kilometres; you need to have planned the day before leaving Miraz. The terrain is not hard, but the distance and the lack of stops make the stage feel long.
The last kilometres drop towards the lake of Sobrado and the village, which is arranged around the Cistercian monastery of Santa María, huge and still inhabited by monks, with its hostel inside the cloister. Sobrado dos Monxes has bars, shops and everything you need, and the monastery deserves the afternoon.
Tips
Leave early and after breakfast: the high point comes at the start and it is better crossed in the cool.
Carry windproof clothing: the area around the top is exposed and in Galicia the weather changes in half an hour.
On the stony sections near the top use poles and watch your feet, especially in the rain.
Get a stamp along the way at any house or bar you find open in the hamlets, and your arrival stamp at the monastery, which stamps; the parchment asks for two route stamps.
There are almost no fountains or bars before you are close to Sobrado: leave Miraz with water for the whole stage.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
