Stage 33 · Camino del Norte
Sobrado dos Monxes → Arzúa
Towards Arzúa and the Camino Francés
A stage of 22.1 kilometres with 300 metres of ascent and 460 of descent, moderate difficulty, more downhill than up and with more services than the previous days. You leave Sobrado dos Monxes on the road and soon take tracks between meadows, oak groves and hamlets: this is inland Galicia, green and rolling, with stone houses, hórreos and cattle at every bend.
Around the midpoint you pass through Boimorto, the only village on the route with bars, a shop and a pharmacy, and the place for the long stop. After it come more tracks and local roads through Sendelle and other hamlets, with short climbs and longer descents, until the last kilometres drop for good towards Arzúa.
Arzúa is the end of the solitude. Here the Camino del Norte joins the Camino Francés, and the atmosphere changes all at once: pilgrims everywhere, hostels, bars with set menus, shops and noise. It is a large town, famous for its cheese, with anything you could need. It comes as a shock after so many days of empty hamlets, and while some are grateful for it, others find it hard.
Tips
Boimorto is the mid-stage stop: eat, fill your bottle and get a stamp along the way, because after it there is little before Arzúa.
Leave Sobrado with water; the fountains in the hamlets are few and do not always run.
Book a bed in Arzúa in high season: from here on you share the route with the tide of the Francés and the hostels fill up.
Try the Arzúa cheese, which has its own denomination of origin; it is sold in any shop in town.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

The things that do not expire: where the fountain actually is, which bar opens at six, where not to go in the rain.
None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
