Stage 34 · Camino del Norte
Arzúa → O Pedrouzo
Eucalyptus and the rollers of the Francés
The first full stage on the Camino Francés: 19.3 kilometres with 320 metres of ascent and 380 of descent, easy. You leave Arzúa along the main street and the route immediately drops into a valley and climbs through Preguntoño, and so it goes all day: a constant roller-coaster of short ups and downs, on dirt paths among eucalyptus, oaks and meadows, with stretches of shade and others in the open.
The hamlets follow one another every few kilometres, A Calzada, A Calle, Ferreiros, Salceda, A Brea, Santa Irene, A Rúa, and almost all of them have a bar or a café. After so many days counting the bars on the fingers of one hand, here there are more places to stop than you need, and a pilgrim off the Norte takes it calmly. The N-547 runs parallel to the route and you cross it at several waymarked points.
O Pedrouzo, the main town of the council of O Pino, is a long village beside the road, made for pilgrims: hostels, restaurants, supermarkets and a pharmacy. It is the last night before Santiago, and you can feel it in the bars.
Tips
There is no need to rise early, but leave at a reasonable hour: in high season the hostels in O Pedrouzo fill up in the early afternoon.
With so many bars it is easy to stop too often; pick a couple of stops and save your legs for the rollers of the second half.
At Santa Irene there is a fountain and shade: a good place for the long rest.
The crossings of the N-547 are the delicate points of the stage, above all in morning fog.
The route does not pass through the centre of O Pedrouzo: when you reach A Rúa you have to turn off towards the road to get into the village.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

The things that do not expire: where the fountain actually is, which bar opens at six, where not to go in the rain.
None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
