Stage 35 · Camino del Norte
O Pedrouzo → Santiago de Compostela
Before you set off
No water, no food
Between O Pedrouzo and Santiago de Compostela. — Leave with 1.7 litres of water.
Monte do Gozo and the Obradoiro
The last stage: 19.4 kilometres with 300 metres of ascent and 360 of descent, easy. You leave O Pedrouzo by returning to the route along the track, and the first kilometres run through eucalyptus woodland, damp and in half-light, as far as San Antón and Amenal. Then comes the longest climb of the day, the one that rises around the edge of Lavacolla airport, with the aircraft passing low over the path.
You continue through San Paio and Lavacolla, where medieval pilgrims washed before going in, and through Vilamaior, and a gentle climb brings you to Monte do Gozo, from where you see the towers of the cathedral for the first time. There the descent into the city begins, through San Lázaro, Rúa dos Concheiros and San Pedro, among pavements and traffic, until you cross the Porta do Camiño and enter the stone streets of the old town.
By Casas Reais, Cervantes and Acibechería you reach the Praza do Obradoiro, in front of the cathedral. This is a moment to take slowly. The Pilgrim's Office is nearby, where you ask for the Compostela with your stamped credential, and so is everything else: Santiago is a big city with services at any hour. The stage ends in the square, but the Camino ends when you decide it does.
Tips
Put your departure stamp in O Pedrouzo before you go: the final stage of the parchment needs its four stamps like all the others.
Get a stamp along the way in Lavacolla or on Monte do Gozo, and your arrival stamp at the cathedral or at the Pilgrim's Office, which also stamps.
The Pilgrim's Office has queues in high season; if you arrive mid-morning, go there first and then go to the square.
The pilgrims' mass is at midday in the cathedral; you cannot go in with a pack, and there are lockers nearby.
The photograph in front of the cathedral with the last stamp in place is the one that opens your parchment: take it calmly.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

The things that do not expire: where the fountain actually is, which bar opens at six, where not to go in the rain.
None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
