Stage 27 · Camino del Norte
Ribadeo → Lourenzá
The Eo to the monastery of Lourenzá
A long stage with many hills: 28.5 kilometres with 640 metres of ascent and 540 of descent, difficult. This is where the Camino del Norte leaves the sea for good and turns inland. You leave Ribadeo uphill through Ove and Vilela, on paved lanes and dirt paths, with the Eo estuary falling behind and a landscape of meadows, eucalyptus, stone walls and Galician hórreos.
The stage is a string of small hamlets, A Ponte de Arante with its chapel and its bridge, Vilamartín Pequeno and Vilamartín Grande, Gondán, San Xusto de Cabarcos, linked by climbs and descents that are never long but that add up. There is the odd village bar, not all of them open every day, and few reliable fountains. The going is comfortable, almost always on track, but the distance and the accumulated climbing tell.
The last kilometres drop through woodland into the Lourenzá valley. Vilanova de Lourenzá is a small town built around the monastery of San Salvador, whose Baroque façade anticipates that of the cathedral of Santiago, by the same architect. It has just enough to sleep, eat and shop, and a square to sit in while the tiredness passes.
Tips
Leave early: it is long, it climbs from the first kilometre, and the bars along the way are not always open.
Carry food and water from Ribadeo for the whole day and do not count on finding anything before A Ponte de Arante.
The Galician waymarking stones make the route impossible to lose; even so, look twice at the arrows where the hamlets branch.
Visit the monastery of Lourenzá if you arrive in daylight: the church gives stamps and is worth the time.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

The things that do not expire: where the fountain actually is, which bar opens at six, where not to go in the rain.
None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
