La Caridad → Ribadeo
The Puente de los Santos and Galicia
A stage of 22.1 kilometres with 330 metres of ascent and 350 of descent, moderate difficulty, and the last one in Asturias. You leave La Caridad on tracks and local roads towards Valdepares, drop to the river Porcía and climb again towards Tol, among meadows, eucalyptus and hamlets. It is an inland stretch, rolling and quiet, with the odd village bar for coffee but no major stops.
Around the midpoint the route approaches the Eo estuary and drops to Figueras, a village of fishermen and indiano houses on the water, with bars and views of Ribadeo on the far bank. It is the most agreeable stop of the day. From there you climb to the Puente de los Santos, which crosses the Eo estuary on its pedestrian walkway: it is long, it runs high above the water, and halfway across you pass from Asturias into Galicia.
On the other side you enter Ribadeo, in the province of Lugo, the first Galician town on the Camino del Norte, and it has everything: an arcaded square, indiano houses, a harbour and shops. From here the signs and the place names turn Galician, and the villages become smaller and more frequent.
Tips
Figueras is the place to eat and to get a stamp along the way before crossing into Galicia; the parchment asks for two route stamps.
There is a coastal variant by Tapia de Casariego, longer and with more sea; the official route runs inland and is the one described here.
Carry water from La Caridad: between Valdepares and Figueras the fountains are few.
In Ribadeo get your arrival stamp and shop without hurrying: there are shops and a pharmacy, and from here on the villages are smaller.
The Puente de los Santos is very windy and has fast traffic alongside: cross on the pedestrian walkway, hold on to your hat and do not stop in the middle.
