Stage 25 · Camino del Norte
Luarca → La Caridad
The Navia estuary at halfway
One of the long stages of the Camino del Norte: 30.4 kilometres with 640 metres of ascent and 610 of descent, difficult. You leave Luarca uphill through the Villar district and walk on tracks and local roads between meadows to Otur, the first hamlet with a bar. Gentle switchbacks follow through Villapedre and Piñera, with the motorway never far away and the beaches of western Asturias below, between the cliffs.
Navia comes just past the midpoint. It is a town with every service, the natural place to eat and rest for a while, and you cross the estuary there on the bridge over the river Navia. The route then climbs through Jarrio and continues on tracks among eucalyptus and the odd local road, with less to look at and the tiredness building up.
Cartavio is the last village before the end, with a bar and a fountain. La Caridad, the main town of El Franco, is a straggling roadside place without much charm, but it has enough to sleep, eat and shop, which is what you need after a day like this.
Tips
Set off at first light: it is more than thirty kilometres and it is better to reach Navia before the heat of the day.
Have breakfast in Luarca and carry water; there is nothing before Otur, and Villapedre and Piñera do not always have a bar open.
Navia is the place to eat well and to get a stamp along the way: after Jarrio the bars are scarce.
If you are short of strength, you can shorten the day by sleeping in Navia and splitting the kilometres over two days.
The last kilometres run on track and road verge with no shade: hat and sun cream even if the day starts grey.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

It checks GPS every 6 min while you keep it open. GPS drains the battery: if yours is low, switch it off.

The things that do not expire: where the fountain actually is, which bar opens at six, where not to go in the rain.
None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
