Canero, the Esva and Luarca

A short, rewarding stage: 15.7 kilometres with 330 metres of ascent and 350 of descent, easy. You leave Cadavedo by road and soon take tracks and paths between meadows towards Villademoros, with its indiano houses and its tower, and from there drop into the valley of the river Esva, the broadest on this western coast. You cross it at Canero, a small village beside the road with a bar or two to stop at.

From Canero comes the only climb of the day, on a dirt path through eucalyptus to the hamlets of Caroyas and Queruás, up on the height. It is short and undramatic. After that the route runs almost level on tracks and local roads, with the sea appearing now and then and some stretches of shade.

The arrival in Luarca is one of the finest on the Camino del Norte: you come in high up, beside the cemetery and the chapel of La Atalaya, and drop all at once to the harbour, with the town packed into the bottom of the valley of the river Negro and the boats moored in front of the houses. Luarca has everything, and it deserves the free afternoon that so short a stage leaves you.

Tips

Canero is the mid-morning stop, with a bar and a fountain; after it there is little before Luarca.

Set off calmly but not too late: with 15.7 kilometres you arrive in time for lunch and to see Luarca without rushing.

The descent to the harbour in Luarca is steep and has steps: short strides and care with your knees.

Buy whatever you are missing in Luarca: it is the town with the most shops on this stretch of coast.

Walk with me

It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
