Cliffs along the old coast road

A stage of 17.9 kilometres with 530 metres of ascent and 510 of descent, easy, although with more climbing than the distance suggests: it is a constant up and down following the coast. You leave Soto de Luiña along the valley and the route soon takes to the old N-632, which winds above the cliffs of western Asturias, with the sea almost always on your right.

The stage strings together small villages, Novellana, Castañeras, Santa Marina, Ballota, each with a few houses, a fountain and now and then a bar. Between them, stretches on the road verge alternate with dirt paths that drop into the stream valleys and climb out again. Every descent has its climb, and that is where the height gain comes from. The views of beaches hidden between the cliffs make up for the tarmac.

The end of the day drops to Cadavedo, a village of indiano houses spread out around the road, with just enough to eat and sleep. If there is still light, the chapel of La Regalina, out on the headland above the sea, is the best place of the day to sit and look.

Tips

The stretches on the verge of the N-632 carry traffic: walk on the left, in single file and in visible clothing if there is fog.

Novellana and Ballota are the natural stops for coffee and for a stamp along the way; the parchment asks for two route stamps as well as departure and arrival.

Fill your bottle in Soto de Luiña: the villages do have fountains, but not all of them run all year.

It is short: take it slowly and use the time to go down to a beach, as the one at Cadavedo is a step from the village.

The mountain variant by Las Palancas is long, has no services and is often closed: keep to the coast.

Walk with me

It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
