El Pito and the Cudillero coast

A short stage with little climbing: 15.8 kilometres with 390 metres of ascent and 400 of descent, easy. After three long days it is welcome, and it leaves time to arrive early and rest. You leave Muros de Nalón by road towards El Pito, already in the municipality of Cudillero, with the Selgas palace and gardens beside the route: the first natural stop of the day.

From there you walk on tracks and local roads, with gentle switchbacks among meadows, eucalyptus woods and hamlets of houses with wooden galleries. The route passes above Cudillero without dropping into the village, which stays hidden in its hollow beside the harbour. You cross the coast roads at a couple of points and there is the odd bar along the way, but in general it is a quiet stage with few people on it.

The arrival in Soto de Luiña is straightforward, on track and with one last descent. It is a small village at the foot of the range, with a Baroque church and the old pilgrims' hospital, and just enough to sleep, eat and buy a few things.

Tips

With 15.8 kilometres there is no need to rise early, but leave in good time if you want to see the Selgas gardens at El Pito.

Carry water from Muros; the fountains along the way cannot be trusted in summer.

Cudillero is worth a visit if you have never been, but allow for the time: you go down into the village and then back up again.

Get your arrival stamp in Soto de Luiña at the hostel or the church, which are almost the only options in the village.

Walk with me

It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
