Between Zafra and Villafranca de los Barros. — Leave with 2.6 litres of water.
Los Santos and a sea of vines
A short and pleasant stage: 19.8 kilometres with 180 metres of ascent and 210 of descent, low difficulty. You leave Zafra to the north alongside the railway, and after some five kilometres reach Los Santos de Maimona, a large village with bars and shops, a good place for breakfast if you started early.
On the way out of Los Santos comes the only climb of the day: a short, dry pull over the sierra de San Cristóbal, with views back to Zafra and its castle. After that the route drops to the flat and never climbs again: straight tracks between vineyards and olive groves as far as the eye can see, the very image of Tierra de Barros. There are no villages and no bars in this second half, and no shade either.
Villafranca de los Barros appears at the end of a long track and you come in along wide streets to the centre. It is a small town, known for its love of music, with everything you need to sleep, eat and shop. A stage to take gently and finish by midday.
Tips
Stamp your departure in Zafra, a stamp along the way in Los Santos de Maimona and your arrival in Villafranca: it is an easy stage for keeping the parchment in order.
Buy what you need in Los Santos de Maimona: from there to Villafranca there is nothing.
The San Cristóbal climb is short, but with the sun in your face you feel it; get it done before the heat builds.
Stock up well in Villafranca, because tomorrow is the longest and barest stage of the plain.
