The endless straight of Tierra de Barros

A stage remembered for its monotony: 27.3 kilometres, almost flat, with 190 metres of ascent and 220 of descent, moderate difficulty because of the distance and the complete lack of anything. You leave Villafranca de los Barros on farm tracks through vines and olives, and the route soon takes a straight dirt track that runs on for kilometre after kilometre, the same landscape on either side and a flat horizon.

This is the heart of Tierra de Barros: vineyard as far as you can see, red earth, the odd farm shed and no shade. Almendralejo lies off to one side, a few kilometres from the route, and its towers stay in view for much of the morning, but the way does not go in. The track junctions are marked with waymarker stones; look carefully, because every track looks the same.

In the last part the ground undulates slightly and you cross the road to enter Torremejía, a small village beside the N-630 with just enough to sleep and eat. Many pilgrims go on to Mérida the next day well rested thanks to this halt.

Tips

Walk at night in summer and at first light the rest of the year: that shadeless straight at midday is the hardest thing on the route in Extremadura.

Cap, sun cream and light clothing; the glare off the ground tires you as much as the sun.

At the track junctions look carefully at the arrows: every track looks like the last one.

There is little in Torremejía; if you need anything particular, buy it in Villafranca before you leave.

There is not one village, bar or fountain in the 27.3 kilometres: water and food for the whole day.

Walk with me

It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
