The Roman bridge over the Guadiana

A short stage, designed so that you reach Mérida with time to see it: 16.2 kilometres with 110 metres of ascent and 170 of descent, low difficulty. You leave Torremejía on tracks parallel to the road, between fields and vineyards, and most of the morning is flat ground with no villages, the N-630 never far away and the odd section right beside it.

As the city draws closer the route turns urban: industrial estates, road junctions and streets until you come out on the bank of the Guadiana. There lies the reward: you enter Mérida over the Roman bridge, the longest the Romans left in Hispania, with the Moorish alcazaba on the far side and the wide river below.

Mérida was the capital of Lusitania and still is in stone: the theatre and the amphitheatre, the temple of Diana, the arch of Trajano, the acueducto de los Milagros that you walk out under tomorrow. It is a city with everything and it deserves a whole afternoon, or even a rest day, before the long stage that follows.

Tips

Set off early so as to arrive before lunch: the afternoon in Mérida is for the theatre, the amphitheatre and the Roman museum.

Carry water from Torremejía; the stage is short but there are no bars until the edge of the city.

Cross the Roman bridge slowly and look back: it is one of the finest entrances on the whole route.

Buy everything for tomorrow in Mérida; after Aljucén you will find nothing for many kilometres.

Walk with me

It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
