Calzadilla, vines and the squares of Zafra
A middling stage with no complications: 25.1 kilometres with 260 metres of ascent and 330 of descent, moderate difficulty more for the distance than for the terrain. You leave Fuente de Cantos on tracks through cereal fields and in a little over an hour reach Calzadilla de los Barros, a small village with a bar and a church whose altarpiece deserves a look if it is open.
Beyond Calzadilla the route enters Tierra de Barros proper: vineyards, olive groves and red earth, on wide tracks that rise and fall without any sharpness. There is a long empty stretch until Puebla de Sancho Pérez appears in the last quarter of the stage, where you can stop for a drink before the end.
From Puebla you come into Zafra through its outskirts, with more tarmac than you would like, until the old town appears. Zafra is one of the great halts of the route: the alcázar of the dukes of Feria, the plaza Grande and the arcaded plaza Chica, white streets and every service. It is worth arriving with time to see it.
Tips
Stop in Calzadilla de los Barros in mid-morning: it is the only bar until nearly the end.
There is no water between Calzadilla and Puebla de Sancho Pérez; fill your bottle before going on.
On hot days walk at night: Tierra de Barros has not one tree to shelter under.
Zafra has shops enough to replace anything you are missing, from boots to sun cream.
