Las Camellas and the monumental city

A very short stage: 11.7 kilometres with 180 metres of ascent and 110 of descent, low difficulty, half a morning's walking. You leave Valdesalor across the river Salor by a bridge of Roman origin and the route follows tracks and verges parallel to the road, with the sierra de la Mosca on your right and Cáceres still hidden behind the hills.

The only climb of the day is the puerto de las Camellas, an easy-angled pull that brings the city into view at the top. From there it is all downhill and all city: you come in through new districts, wide streets and traffic, until the streets narrow and the plaza Mayor opens up with the arco de la Estrella at the far end.

Behind the arch lies the old town, a World Heritage Site: palaces of golden stone, towers, the concatedral de Santa María, silent squares and storks on every roof. Cáceres is a big city with every service, good food and a great deal to see, so the short stage is deliberate: the afternoon is for losing yourself inside the walls.

Tips

There is no need for an early start: you reach Cáceres before lunch without hurrying.

Carry water from Valdesalor; there are no bars until the edge of the city.

The old town looks best at dusk and after dark, when the tour groups have gone; drop your pack and go up without hurrying.

Use Cáceres to buy everything for the next two stages: chemist, food and whatever has failed in your pack.

The climb to the puerto de las Camellas is short but dry and without shade; do not leave it for midday.

Walk with me

It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
