Roman road and bridges over the Ayuela
One of those stages that show the Vía de la Plata in its purest state: 26.4 kilometres with 330 metres of ascent and 420 of descent, moderate difficulty. You leave Alcuéscar downhill on tracks through olive groves and dehesa; near the village, off to one side, stands the Visigothic basilica of Santa Lucía del Trampal, worth the detour if you have time.
After some 10 kilometres you reach Casas de Don Antonio, a small village with a bar, and from there on the Roman road becomes visible: paved stretches, milestones standing at the edge and a pair of Roman bridges over the Ayuela and its streams. Aldea del Cano, at about kilometre 16, is the last place with services, with a bar and a shop beside the road.
The final part is open dehesa with gentle switchbacks, no shade and the sierra de Cáceres on the horizon ahead. Valdesalor is a settlement village built in the nineteen-fifties, small and laid out on a grid beside the river Salor, with just enough to sleep and eat. Few services, but enough for a quiet night.
Tips
Casas de Don Antonio and Aldea del Cano are the two halts: water and a stamp at both, because after them there is nothing.
In hot weather walk at night; the dehesa between Aldea del Cano and Valdesalor has not one tree beside the track.
The paved Roman stretches are uneven: use poles or watch your ankles.
There is little to buy in Valdesalor; if you want to eat out of your pack, load it in Aldea del Cano.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

The things that do not expire: where the fountain actually is, which bar opens at six, where not to go in the rain.
None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
