Stage 13 · Vía de la Plata y Camino Sanabrés
Cáceres → Casar de Cáceres
Before you set off
No water, no food
Between Cáceres and Casar de Cáceres. — Leave with 1.9 litres of water.
Short, into the land of torta
A short, flat linking stage: 11.1 kilometres with 120 metres of ascent and 80 of descent, low difficulty. You leave Cáceres through the old town and the streets to the north, with a long stretch of pavement and industrial estate before the city is behind you. It is a graceless exit but a quick one, and the arrows are well placed.
Once out, the landscape opens onto the Cáceres peneplain: pasture, stone walls, dirt tracks and thin dehesa, with a very wide horizon and the sierra now at your back. It is ground without the slightest difficulty and almost without shade, walked in a couple of hours, and it lets the legs recover after the city.
Casar de Cáceres comes into view early across the flat and you enter past its hermitage and along broad streets to the square. It is a village with every service, famous for the torta del Casar, a creamy sheep's cheese you have to try. You stop here rather than in Cáceres for one reason: tomorrow there are 33 kilometres with nothing at all, and it pays to start rested and with a full pack.
Tips
Stamp your departure in Cáceres, a stamp along the way in any bar on the way out of the city and your arrival in Casar: the short stage leaves plenty of time for the parchment.
The big shop is here: water, food for the whole of tomorrow and something in reserve.
If you arrive in mid-morning, eat at your ease; the torta del Casar is the local dish.
Check your feet and your boots this afternoon; tomorrow is the longest stage without services on the route.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

It checks GPS every 6 min while you keep it open. GPS drains the battery: if yours is low, switch it off.

None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
