Casar de Cáceres → Embalse de Alcántara
Before you set off
No water, no food
Between Casar de Cáceres and Casar de Cáceres. — Leave with 2.5 litres of water.
No water, no food
From kilometre 15.0 to 27.7. — Leave with 2.4 litres of water.
Thirty-three kilometres with nothing
This is the loneliest stage on the whole Vía de la Plata: 33 kilometres with 300 metres of ascent and 390 of descent, high difficulty, and no village, bar or fountain from the moment you leave Casar de Cáceres until the very end. You set off on dirt tracks between pasture and stone walls, following a wide drove road heading north, with the peneplain opening out on every side.
The morning is long and monotonous: dehesa, livestock, gates, distant farmsteads and a drove road that rises and falls without end. In spring it is green and full of flowers, in summer a parched waste. As you go on, the ground breaks up into hills and the first views of the Alcántara reservoir appear, with the dammed Tajo below and the sierra beyond.
The last part drops towards the water and crosses the reservoir on the road bridge beside the N-630, a long and very windy crossing. The stage ends on the far side, at the reservoir itself, where there is only the accommodation and nothing else: no shop, no village, no bar apart from the place itself. The ending is beautiful, with the water and the silence, but you must arrive prepared.
Tips
Walk at night in summer and at dawn the rest of the year: these are eight long hours with no shade and no water.
Carry a minimum of three litres of water and food for the whole day and for supper, just in case.
The gates on the drove road are for opening and shutting; leave them as you found them.
The bridge over the reservoir has a narrow verge and wind: cross on the left, facing the traffic.
At the end of the stage there is only the accommodation at the reservoir: book before leaving Casar de Cáceres.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

The things that do not expire: where the fountain actually is, which bar opens at six, where not to go in the rain.
None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
