Stage 28 · Vía de la Plata y Camino Sanabrés
Tábara → Santa Marta de Tera
Before you set off
No water, no food
Between Tábara and Santa Marta de Tera. — Leave with 2.6 litres of water.
The Tera and the Romanesque pilgrim
A kindly stage of low difficulty: 22.8 kilometres with 180 metres of ascent and 230 of descent, almost all on dirt tracks among pine woods, holm oaks and ploughland. You leave Tábara to the west and the route climbs a little towards the sierra before levelling out across a rolling plateau, so lonely that you barely meet a soul. It is the typical ground of this part of Zamora: flat, dry and long in the horizon.
Bercianos de Valverde comes just past the halfway point, in the valley of the river Castrón, and is the first possible halt of the day. From there the way drops gradually towards the Tera and enters Santa Croya de Tera, with the river alongside now and more shade. All that is left is to cross the bridge over the Tera to reach Santa Marta.
Santa Marta de Tera is a small village, but its Romanesque church is one of the jewels of the whole route: on the south doorway stands the figure of Santiago dressed as a pilgrim, with staff and scrip, the oldest known image with those attributes. It deserves a while before you go looking for a bed, of which there are few in the village.
Tips
Fill your bottle in Tábara and carry something for the morning: there is nothing before Bercianos de Valverde.
Ask to have the church in Santa Marta opened if it is shut; someone in the village usually has the key.
Get a stamp along the way in Bercianos or Santa Croya, and your arrival stamp at the church or the hostel in Santa Marta.
If you find no bed in Santa Marta, Santa Croya, on the other side of the bridge, is the alternative a step away.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

The things that do not expire: where the fountain actually is, which bar opens at six, where not to go in the rain.
None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
