Pine woods and the Agavanzal reservoir
A long stage with hardly any height gain: 27.2 kilometres with 260 metres of ascent and 210 of descent, moderate difficulty because of the distance. You leave Santa Marta de Tera upstream on dirt tracks among poplars and market gardens, and in the first kilometres pass through Calzadilla de Tera and Olleros de Tera, two villages one after the other where it pays to stop, because after them the route is alone for many kilometres.
From Olleros the way follows the course of the Tera beside the canal and skirts the Agavanzal reservoir on tracks through pine woods, with the dam as a landmark. It is a fine stretch with some shade, but a long one, and there is no village at all until Villar de Farfón, a hamlet that is nearly deserted. After that come more pines and a stretch beside the road to the finish.
Rionegro del Puente is a small village on the river Negro, with a hostel, a bar and a sanctuary, that of the Virgen de la Carballeda, seat of a medieval pilgrims' confraternity that still exists. It is enough for sleeping and eating, but little more: better to arrive with whatever you need already bought.
Tips
Shop and fill your bottles in Olleros de Tera before heading on towards the reservoir.
Leave early; the reservoir and pine wood stretch is pleasant, but it drags on and by midday it can be hot.
Watch the arrows on the way out of Olleros and at the reservoir: there are track junctions and it is easy to go astray.
Get a stamp along the way in Calzadilla or Olleros, the last places with a bar for many kilometres.
From Olleros de Tera to Rionegro, some twenty kilometres, there is nowhere reliable to buy anything or to eat.
