Mombuey and the villages of the Carballeda
A middling stage, 24.5 kilometres with 330 metres of ascent and 230 of descent, in which the landscape begins to change: the cereal ends and oaks, chestnuts and the meadows of the Carballeda appear, with the sierra de Sanabria already on the horizon. You leave Rionegro del Puente on tracks through scrub, parallel to the motorway, and after some nine kilometres reach Mombuey, the big village of the stage, with its Romanesque tower beside the road.
After Mombuey the route links a string of small villages, almost all with the stone houses and byres typical of the area: Valdemerilla, Cernadilla, San Salvador de Palazuelo, Entrepeñas. They come one after another, a few kilometres apart, on dirt tracks and stretches of very quiet local road. There is the odd short pull, but nothing serious.
Asturianos is a very small village with a hostel and very little else, so you have to arrive with your shopping done. If you would rather stay somewhere livelier, Mombuey is the alternative for the night, though it leaves more kilometres for the following day.
Tips
Buy everything you need for the evening and for breakfast in Mombuey: in Asturianos there is almost nothing.
Fill your bottle in Mombuey and at any fountain in the villages that follow; water is not lacking, but bars are.
Walk the stretches of local road on the left and pay attention on the bends.
Stamp your departure in Rionegro, along the way in Mombuey and in Cernadilla or Entrepeñas, and your arrival at the hostel in Asturianos.
