Stage 31 · Vía de la Plata y Camino Sanabrés
Asturianos → Puebla de Sanabria
Arriving in Sanabria
A short stage of low difficulty, 17.5 kilometres with 230 metres of ascent and 260 of descent, which serves as a rest before the mountains. You leave Asturianos on paths among oaks and meadows and after a little over four kilometres pass through Palacios de Sanabria, the first place with a bar. Then come Remesal, Otero de Sanabria, with a church whose doorway is worth a look, and Triufé, stone hamlets packed one against the next among chestnut trees, gardens and walls.
The going alternates dirt tracks, a path through oak woods and stretches of quiet local road, with short ups and downs that do not tire you. You can feel the mountains now: greener, more water in the ditches and the peaks of the sierra ever closer.
Puebla de Sanabria is visible from far off, the walled town on top of a hill above the river Tera and crowned by the castle of the counts of Benavente. You cross the river and climb the cobbled streets to the square, with the church of Santa María del Azogue. It is a tourist town with every service and good food. The lago de Sanabria, the largest glacial lake in the peninsula, lies a few kilometres away and is not on the route, but it is the afternoon's excursion if you have time and transport.
Tips
Water and something to eat from Asturianos; Palacios de Sanabria and Otero usually have a bar, but not always open.
It is short: set off unhurried and reach Puebla with time to climb to the castle and see the town.
Buy everything you need for the climb to the Padornelo in Puebla: it is the last large village before Galicia.
Get your stamp at the church of Santa María del Azogue or at the town's tourist office.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

The things that do not expire: where the fountain actually is, which bar opens at six, where not to go in the rain.
None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
