The Padornelo, the big climb
The hardest stage of the route since Sevilla: 33.5 kilometres with 800 metres of ascent and 520 of descent, high difficulty. You leave Puebla de Sanabria down to the river and follow the Tera valley upstream on tracks and stretches of road, among oak woods and meadows, with the motorway close by almost throughout. Terroso lies off to one side and after some twelve kilometres you reach Requejo, the last village with bars and shops before the pass and the place where many split the stage.
From Requejo the climb to the Padornelo begins, some eight kilometres of mountain track along the line of the old road, with sustained gradients among oak and heather, until you pass thirteen hundred metres at the top, beside the houses of Padornelo. It is the roof of the Vía de la Plata and it feels like it: wind, cold and fog are normal even in summer.
From the pass you descend through the village of Padornelo and through Aciberos, a stone hamlet on a beautiful hillside, to Lubián, the last village in Zamora, down in the valley bottom. It is small, with a hostel and the basics for sleeping and eating, and at a thousand metres the nights are cold in any month.
Tips
Leave at dawn: it is a great many kilometres and the climb has to be done in daylight and without rushing.
Eat and load up with water in Requejo; on the Padornelo do not count on anything being open.
Carry waterproofs and something warm even if the weather is fine down below: at the top it changes in minutes.
If your legs are not up to it, sleep in Requejo and climb the pass the next day with fresh legs.
In winter the Padornelo can have snow or ice: ask in Puebla before setting off.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
