A Canda, the way into Galicia
A second pass in two days, but a shorter one: 24.3 kilometres with 760 metres of ascent and 560 of descent, moderate difficulty. You leave Lubián along the valley floor and at once pass the sanctuary of la Tuiza on the edge of the village. From there the climb to the puerto de A Canda begins, on a mountain path among oaks, chestnuts and heather, with the motorway and the high-speed railway crossing the valley below. It is some six kilometres of honest climbing to the top, at about twelve hundred metres, where a marker stone marks the border with Galicia.
Now in the province of Ourense, the descent leads to A Canda, the first Galician hamlet, and then to Vilavella, with stone houses and slate roofs. From here the stage turns rolling: O Pereiro, O Cañizo and a string of tracks and stretches of old road, with short climbs that add up and very little shade in the second half.
A Gudiña is the first large village in Galicia, with every service, a railway station and bars along the main street. It is where the route of the coming days is decided, so it is worth arriving with time and thinking it over calmly.
Tips
Water from Lubián: until Vilavella or O Cañizo count on nothing, and sometimes on nothing there either.
Set off wrapped up and shed layers on the climb; at the top of A Canda it is cold and windy almost always.
From the Galicia marker the signs change to Galician: it is worth getting used to the names.
Get a stamp along the way in A Canda or Vilavella if anything is open, and your arrival stamp at the hostel or the church in A Gudiña.
In fog, the mountain path between Lubián and the top of A Canda calls for attention to the waymarks.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
