The high sierra to Laza
Two routes open up at A Gudiña. The Verín one runs to the south, down the Támega valley, with more villages and services, and rejoins the main route further on, towards Ourense. The Laza one, which these stages follow, goes over the sierra and is finer and harder: 34.5 kilometres with 530 metres of ascent and 1,080 of descent, high difficulty.
You leave A Gudiña climbing to a ridge on a local road that follows the crest for hours, with views of the embalse das Portas and the valleys on either side. Along the way you pass the vendas, old muleteers' inns now half deserted: Venda do Espiño, Venda da Teresa, Venda da Capela, Venda do Bolaño. There are no shops and no bars until Campobecerros, past kilometre twenty, where you can eat and get a stamp. It is the only halt of the day.
Afterwards the route goes on through Portocamba and As Eiras and drops in earnest towards the valley: the last kilometres are a continuous descent on track and path to Laza, at the bottom. Laza is a village with the basics, a hostel and bars, famous for its entroido and its peliqueiros.
Tips
Leave at dawn with water and food for the whole day: there is nothing before Campobecerros and that is more than twenty kilometres away.
Cap and sun cream: the crest is open road, without a single tree.
Poles for the final descent to Laza, which is long and punishes the knees after so many kilometres.
If you are struggling, the stage can be split at Campobecerros, which has accommodation.
A high, exposed section: in wind, fog or a storm there is nowhere to shelter along the whole crest.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

It checks GPS every 6 min while you keep it open. GPS drains the battery: if yours is low, switch it off.

The things that do not expire: where the fountain actually is, which bar opens at six, where not to go in the rain.
None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
