Bandeira, Dornelas and the Ulla valley

A stage of low difficulty, 21 kilometres with 260 metres of ascent and 460 of descent, almost all downhill towards the Ulla. You leave Silleda on tracks between meadows and hamlets and after some seven kilometres reach Bandeira, a village with bars and shops, the natural halt of the morning. Then the route follows local roads and dirt tracks, with the Romanesque church of Dornelas beside the way and hamlets that are ever deeper in the woods.

The second half is one long descent, among oaks, chestnuts and pines, until the Ulla valley opens out, with vines on the slopes and the river below. You pass San Miguel de Castro and drop steeply, by path and road, to the bridge.

Ponte Ulla is a small village on the river bank, now in the municipality of Vedra and in the province of A Coruña, the last of the route: crossing the bridge over the Ulla means leaving Pontevedra behind. There is a hostel and bars, with local wine, but few shops, so it is best to bring what you need from Bandeira.

Tips

Buy whatever you need for the evening and for breakfast in Bandeira; after that there are no shops.

Poles and care with your knees: the descent to the Ulla is long and has steep stretches of tarmac.

Get a stamp along the way in Bandeira and in Dornelas or San Miguel de Castro if anything is open, and your arrival stamp at the hostel in Ponte Ulla.

There is very little accommodation in Ponte Ulla: book, or have an alternative in mind.

Walk with me

It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
