Ponte Ulla → Santiago de Compostela

22km km to Santiago
21,5 km Distance +560 m Ascent −330 m Descent 27,1 km Effort 8 h 30 Time needed · On foot

By Sar to the Obradoiro

The last stage is no formality: 21.5 kilometres with 560 metres of ascent and 330 of descent, moderate difficulty. You leave Ponte Ulla climbing, and climbing hard: the first kilometres are a continuous pull from the river up to Outeiro and Gundián, with the Pico Sacro, the pointed mountain of the Jacobean legend, on your left. It is the last serious climb of the route and it is best done early.

At the top the ground levels and the way follows tracks and local roads among hamlets: Lestedo, which has a bar, Rubial, Deseiro, A Susana. It is a stretch of oaks, meadows and stone houses, with more pilgrims as the kilometres pass. The last villages are A Marrozos and Angrois, with Santiago in sight now, and the route drops towards the city.

You enter along the rúa do Sar, past the Romanesque collegiate church of Santa María de Sar, and keep climbing through the old town until you come out on the plaza del Obradoiro, facing the cathedral. This is a moment to take slowly. Santiago has the Pilgrim's Office, where you ask for the Compostela with your stamped credential, and everything else, being a city with services at any hour. The stage ends in the square; the Camino, whenever you decide.

Tips

Put your departure stamp in Ponte Ulla before you start the climb: the last stage of the parchment carries its four stamps like all the others.

Get a stamp along the way in Lestedo or Angrois and your arrival stamp at the cathedral or the Pilgrim's Office, which also stamps.

Water from Ponte Ulla for the climb; you can refill in Lestedo.

The Pilgrim's Office has queues in high season; if you arrive in mid-morning, go there first and then sit down in the square.

The pilgrims' Mass is at midday in the cathedral and you cannot go in with a pack; there are lockers nearby.

Walk with me

It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
