Stage 20 · Vía de la Plata y Camino Sanabrés
La Calzada de Béjar → Fuenterroble de Salvatierra
Before you set off
No drinking water
Between La Calzada de Béjar and La Calzada de Béjar. — Leave with 1.6 litres of water.
Into the high country of Salamanca
A comfortable stage: 20.4 kilometres with 330 metres of ascent and 220 of descent, low difficulty. You leave La Calzada de Béjar on a track between meadows and holm oaks, already in the landscape of upland Salamanca: a huge sky, granite underfoot, stone walls and cold mornings almost all year round. The sierra de Béjar is behind you, under snow well into spring.
At about kilometre 8 you pass through Valverde de Valdelacasa and at about kilometre 12 through Valdelacasa, two small villages where a bar may or may not be open, depending on the day and the season. It is wise not to count on them. Between the two the route follows wide tracks and stretches of quiet tarmac, gently rolling, with no serious climb.
The last part rises slightly towards Fuenterroble de Salvatierra across dehesa and open country, with wind almost always. Fuenterroble is a small village whose parish is known all along the route for the welcome it gives pilgrims, and it has a bar and a small shop. It makes a good end to the stage, human and quiet.
Tips
Set off with water and something to eat: the bars in Valverde and Valdelacasa are not always open.
Mornings here are cold even in summer; keep a layer within reach for the first hours.
The shop in Fuenterroble may keep short hours: ask when you arrive and buy tomorrow's supplies early.
The wind is constant on these uplands; a light windproof is worth more than a fleece.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

The things that do not expire: where the fountain actually is, which bar opens at six, where not to go in the rain.
None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
