Stage 21 · Vía de la Plata y Camino Sanabrés
Fuenterroble de Salvatierra → San Pedro de Rozados
Before you set off
No water, no food
Between Fuenterroble de Salvatierra and San Pedro de Rozados. — Leave with 5.2 litres of water.
Pico de la Dueña and the meseta
A long and lonely stage, with the highest climb of the Vía de la Plata in Castilla: 28.6 kilometres with 420 metres of ascent and 460 of descent, moderate difficulty. You leave Fuenterroble de Salvatierra on dehesa tracks and at about kilometre 5 pass beside Navarredonda de Salvatierra, a small village with no dependable services. Then the climb begins, easy-angled at first and sharper at the end, towards the Pico de la Dueña.
The summit, around halfway through the stage, is a bare ridge at some 1,140 metres with an iron cross and wind turbines around it. It is the high point of the route until Galicia, and from the top you see the whole Salamanca meseta, with Salamanca itself in the distance on a clear day. The descent is long, on dirt tracks and drove road, the holm oaks thinning until they disappear.
The second half is open country: cereal, pasture, livestock and the odd walled estate, with no shade and no villages until San Pedro de Rozados, which appears on a flat at the end of a long straight. It is a small village with a hostel, a bar and a shop, enough for the night and for preparing your arrival in Salamanca.
Tips
Leave early and with water and food for the whole day: there is nothing dependable between Fuenterroble and San Pedro.
The climb to the Pico de la Dueña is long but on a good track; in fog watch the arrows carefully, because they are easy to lose on the drove road.
The second half has no shade: if it is hot, walk it before midday.
Get your arrival stamp at the hostel or the bar in San Pedro; the village is small and there is nowhere else to do it.
On the Pico de la Dueña the wind and the cold bite even in spring; keep something warm within reach.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

The things that do not expire: where the fountain actually is, which bar opens at six, where not to go in the rain.
None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
