Baños and the puerto de Béjar
A mountain stage, the first real one since Andalucía: 22.3 kilometres with 620 metres of ascent and 230 of descent, moderate difficulty. You leave Aldeanueva del Camino on paths through the Ambroz valley, among chestnut trees, orchards and meadows, with a stretch beside the old road, and after some 10 kilometres reach Baños de Montemayor, a spa village with Roman baths, steep streets and everything you need for breakfast and shopping.
From Baños the climb to the puerto de Béjar begins: you leave the village on the Roman road, with paved stretches rising among chestnuts and oaks, in the shade, up to the col that marks the end of Extremadura and the start of Castilla y León. The climb is long and unbroken, but the surface is good and the scenery makes up for it.
On the far side the ground eases: tracks and the old road with views of the sierra, and a gentle descent to La Calzada de Béjar, a small hamlet of stone houses with a hostel, a bar and very little else. It is your first night in Salamanca province, colder and quieter than those in the valley.
Tips
Put your departure stamp in Aldeanueva, a stamp along the way in Baños de Montemayor and your arrival in La Calzada: it is an easy stage to document.
Have breakfast and fill your bottle in Baños: from there to La Calzada nothing is open.
The climb to the pass is long; go at your own pace and with water, because the mid-morning sun in your face is felt even where there is shade.
There is very little in La Calzada de Béjar; buy whatever you want for supper or breakfast in Baños.
The paving of the Roman road is slippery when wet, above all on the way down; watch where you put your feet.
