Stage 18 · Vía de la Plata y Camino Sanabrés
Oliva de Plasencia → Aldeanueva del Camino

From kilometre 0.0 to 16.6. — Leave with 3.1 litres of water.
Cáparra and the Ambroz valley
A short stage and one of the most historic: 20.5 kilometres with 330 metres of ascent and 260 of descent, low difficulty. You leave Oliva de Plasencia by yesterday's detour to rejoin the Roman road and, before long, the arch of Cáparra appears in the middle of the dehesa, a four-sided Roman arch that stood at the centre of a town whose ruins lie all around it. There is a visitor centre and you can walk among the remains.
From Cáparra the route continues through holm oak dehesa and pasture, with the odd milestone, until it crosses the road and approaches the motorway. The second part is more monotonous, with tracks between fenced estates and a few stretches of tarmac, but the sierra de Béjar and the mountains of the Ambroz valley are ahead of you now, green and high, announcing the change of landscape.
You come into Aldeanueva del Camino along its long streets, past the church and the bridge over the river Ambroz. It is a village with every service, a valley feel and chestnut trees all around. A good place to sleep before the climb to the puerto de Béjar.
Tips
There is no bar at all between Oliva and Aldeanueva: carry water and something to eat for the whole morning.
The arch of Cáparra stands right on the route; stop there, it is the most impressive Roman moment on the Vía.
In hot weather the dehesa at Cáparra and the tracks after the motorway have no shade.
Buy for tomorrow in Aldeanueva: the climb to the pass is long and the villages on the way are small.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

The things that do not expire: where the fountain actually is, which bar opens at six, where not to go in the rain.
None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
