Cea → Castro Dozón
The detour to Oseira
A short stage of low difficulty, 15.5 kilometres with 420 metres of ascent and 300 of descent, though there is a detour that can lengthen it. On the way out of Cea the route divides: the direct line goes through Piñor and the hamlets of the Arenteiro valley, among tracks, oaks and local road, and climbs without any sharpness to the high point at Castro Dozón. The Oseira variant branches off to the left, adds a few kilometres and a good deal of climbing, and rejoins the main route before Castro Dozón.
The detour is worth it: the monastery of Santa María a Real de Oseira, Cistercian and still inhabited by monks, is one of the great houses of Galicia, with an enormous church, three cloisters and a chapter house whose vaulting is famous. It stands in a closed valley and you go down to reach it; afterwards you have to climb back up to the ridge to rejoin the route, on mountain tracks and a stretch of road.
Castro Dozón is a small village up on the heights beside the road, with a hostel, a bar and little else. The stage is short precisely to leave time for Oseira; anyone taking the direct line arrives by midday.
Tips
Decide in Cea whether you are going by Oseira: the fork is on the way out of the village and there is no easy way back.
Carry bread and water from Cea; on the Oseira variant there is nothing dependable before the monastery.
The monastery has visiting hours; if you arrive outside them, the church and the exterior still make the detour worthwhile.
Get a stamp at the monastery of Oseira if you pass that way, and if not, in Castro Dozón on arrival.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

The things that do not expire: where the fountain actually is, which bar opens at six, where not to go in the rain.
None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
