Stage 39 · Vía de la Plata y Camino Sanabrés
Castro Dozón → Lalín
Before you set off
No drinking water
From kilometre 3.5 to 12.3. — Leave with 1.6 litres of water.
Down towards Lalín
A middling stage, 22 kilometres with 330 metres of ascent and 460 of descent, in which you leave the province of Ourense behind and enter that of Pontevedra. You set off from Castro Dozón on tracks and stretches beside the main road, climbing first to the alto de Santo Domingo, the last of the sierra, and then dropping through farming hamlets: Puxallos, Pontenoufe, Xestas, Botos. The going is dirt track, quiet local road and the odd crossing of the main road and the motorway.
It is a green stage of meadows, oaks and hórreos, with gentle ups and downs and water in nearly every hamlet, though bars are scarce until the second half. Near the end you pass the Romanesque church of Donsión and drop to A Laxe, already in the municipality of Lalín, where the route crosses the railway and the main road.
The centre of Lalín lies off the route, a few kilometres from A Laxe, and you have to make a detour to sleep there. It is a large town with every service and a reputation for its cocido. Anyone who sleeps in the centre has to come back to the route by the same detour.
Tips
Water from Castro Dozón: there are fountains in the first hamlets, but nothing open until past halfway.
Take care at the crossings of the main road and on the stretches beside it; the traffic is fast.
Get a stamp along the way in Botos or A Laxe and your arrival stamp in Lalín, at the hostel or the church.
If you would rather not detour into the centre of Lalín, you can also sleep in A Laxe, right on the route.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

The things that do not expire: where the fountain actually is, which bar opens at six, where not to go in the rain.
None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
