The climb to Cudeiro
A short stage in kilometres, 22.4, but with 760 metres of ascent and only 330 of descent, moderate difficulty. You leave Ourense across the Miño by the old bridge, with the city behind you, and without any transition the climb begins: the pull up to Cudeiro is one of the steepest on the whole route, several kilometres of streets, steps and steeply rising track that leave the city below in no time. More than one waymarked line leads out of the city; all of them climb.
Once in Cudeiro the ground eases and the route follows tracks and local roads among hamlets, vines and oak woods: Tamallancos, Bouzas, Sobreira, Faramontaos, Viduedo, with a bar in some of them and a fountain in nearly all. It goes on climbing, but in short pulls that are easy enough. This is inland Galicia, green and quiet, with very little traffic.
Cea, officially San Cristovo de Cea, is a village with every service and famous for its bread, baked in wood-fired ovens and sold fresh in the square. There is a hostel and places to eat, and the afternoon is long enough to rest your legs after the climb.
Tips
Have breakfast in Ourense before crossing the bridge: the Cudeiro climb on an empty stomach feels very long.
Climb calmly and with water; there is no fountain before the top.
Get a stamp along the way in Tamallancos or in any of the hamlets with a bar, and your arrival stamp in Cea.
Buy bread in Cea in the afternoon: it is the best food for the next day and it keeps well in the pack.
