The long stage to the walls

This is the longest stage of the Camino Primitivo: 30.5 kilometres with 520 metres of ascent and 760 of descent, high difficulty more for the distance than for the hills. You leave O Cádavo climbing on a track among pines and meadows, and the path soon drops to Vilabade, with its Gothic church, and to Castroverde, the only town of the stage, with bars, shops and a pharmacy, a little short of a third of the way.

From Castroverde the terrain softens: long kilometres on paved lanes and paths among meadows, oak woods and hamlets of inland Lugo, with no serious climbs but no let-up either, some shade and many open stretches. You pass through Vilar de Cas, Gondar and Carballido, hamlets with little or nowhere to stop, and the landscape gradually loses its mountains and flattens out.

The entry into Lugo is long, through suburbs and industrial estates, until the Roman wall appears, complete and more than two kilometres round. You enter through one of its gates and the streets lead to the cathedral and the main square. Lugo is a big city, with everything at any hour, and it is worth arriving with time to walk the full circuit of the wall along the top.

Tips

Leave at dawn and have breakfast in O Cádavo: with 30.5 kilometres every hour of daylight counts, especially in winter.

Castroverde is the compulsory stop: get a transit stamp, buy bread and fill your bottle, because afterwards very little is open.

Carry food for the second half. Between Castroverde and Lugo the hamlets are small and the bars, where there are any, keep odd hours.

Get your arrival stamp at the cathedral or the tourist office in Lugo: the stage needs a departure stamp, two transit stamps and an arrival stamp, and in Lugo it is easy to forget with so much to see.

Several stretches between Castroverde and Lugo follow a local road with no hard shoulder: walk on the left and wear something visible.

Walk with me

It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
