The Roman bridge and the old road
A short, flat stage to recover from Lugo: 19.5 kilometres with 260 metres of ascent and 270 of descent, low difficulty. You leave the city through the Porta Miñá, one of the gates in the wall, and drop down to the river Miño to cross it on the Roman bridge, rebuilt many times but still standing on the same foundations.
After crossing the Miño the route climbs gently on paved lanes among hamlets and meadows, following for much of the way the line of the old Roman road that linked Lucus Augusti with Iria Flavia. You pass San Vicente do Burgo, with its church beside the path, and Bacurín and other small parishes where there is little besides houses, hórreos and cows. It is a stage with no hills to worry about, almost all tarmac and with little shade.
San Román da Retorta is a tiny hamlet announced by a Roman milestone beside the church. There is a hostel and little else; whatever you need for the afternoon and dinner is best sorted out beforehand, or by asking as soon as you arrive.
Tips
Buy in Lugo whatever you will need for the afternoon and the night: there are no shops in San Román and the bar, if there is one, closes early.
No need to get up early, but do leave in daylight to see the wall and the bridge without hurrying.
Fill your bottle in Lugo; the hamlets have fountains, but few bars and with short opening hours.
It is almost all tarmac: comfortable footwear and a change of pace every hour so your soles do not suffer.
If the hostel in San Román is full, there is accommodation in nearby hamlets; call before you arrive.
