Montouto and the rolling hills of Baleira
A stage of constant ups and downs: 24.3 kilometres with 600 metres of ascent and 800 of descent, moderate difficulty. You leave A Fonsagrada on a track towards Padrón and the route runs for a while across the uplands, with long views and little shelter, to the Hospital de Montouto, the ruins of the old pilgrim hospital beside a dolmen, on a saddle very exposed to the wind. It is one of the places with most history on the Primitivo and comes a little short of halfway.
From Montouto there is a long descent to Paradavella, the first hamlet with a bar, and the route continues through A Lastra and A Fontaneira in a chain of short descents and climbs, on dirt tracks, paths among oaks and the odd stretch beside the road. No single hill is long, but the total wears you down more than the figures suggest.
The last climb, up to A Fontaneira, is the hardest of the day, and from there you descend through woodland to O Cádavo, the capital of the municipality of Baleira. It is a small roadside village with what you need to sleep, eat and shop.
Tips
Fill your bottle in A Fonsagrada and carry something to eat: before Paradavella there are few fountains and no bar.
It is almost always windy at Montouto; carry something to cover up with even if the weather is fine lower down.
Paradavella and A Lastra are the stops of the stage: get a transit stamp in either and eat before the final climb.
After rain the dirt paths on the descent from Montouto turn to mud: wear closed shoes with a proper sole.
