Stage 7 · Camino Primitivo
Grandas de Salime → A Fonsagrada
Before you set off
No water, no food
Between Grandas de Salime and Grandas de Salime. — Leave with 1.5 litres of water.
The Acebo and the entry into Galicia
One of the big stages of the Primitivo: 25.5 kilometres with 980 metres of ascent and 640 of descent, high difficulty. You leave Grandas de Salime on tracks among meadows and scattered hamlets, with short ups and downs, and soon pass through Castro, close to the hillfort of Chao Samartín, the most important archaeological site in the area.
From Castro the serious part begins: a long, steady climb on track and path up to the Alto do Acebo, with the turbines of the wind farm as a landmark. At the top, a little past the midpoint of the stage, you leave Asturias and enter Galicia, and from here on the village names change language. The descent is gentle, on a wide track among pines and meadows, towards Fonfría, the first Galician hamlet with a bar, and continues through Barbeitos and Silvela, with short ups and downs and many kilometres of tarmac.
The end climbs again: A Fonsagrada sits high up, at almost a thousand metres, and the last slope feels long. It is a town with every service, the only one in the district, and a good place to rest and recover.
Tips
Leave early and have breakfast in Grandas: until Fonfría, already in Galicia, there is nothing reliably open, and that is many hours away.
Carry water for the whole climb to the Acebo. It is almost always windy at the top and you feel the cold even when it is warm below.
The stretch between Fonfría and A Fonsagrada is nearly all tarmac; stop in Fonfría and get a transit stamp, as there are few places afterwards.
Shop in A Fonsagrada in the afternoon: the town has everything, but the shops close early.
In winter and in bad weather the Alto do Acebo can be closed by snow: ask in Grandas before setting out.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

The things that do not expire: where the fountain actually is, which bar opens at six, where not to go in the rain.
None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
