Oia → Baiona
Mougás, Cape Silleiro and Baiona
A coastal stage with a climb at the end: 19.4 kilometres with 280 metres of ascent and 290 of descent, low difficulty. You leave Oia along the promenade by the monastery and the route follows the coast on paths, boardwalks and stretches of road, passing Viladesuso and Mougás, villages with bars and a place or two to stop, with the sea always on one side and the hills of the sierra of A Groba on the other.
At Mougás the route leaves the shore and climbs on a dirt track into the hills to go round Cape Silleiro, with its lighthouse. It is the only serious climb of the stage, long and without shade, and from the top you see the Cíes islands and the entrance to the Vigo estuary. The descent leads to Baredo on tracks among eucalyptus and returns to the sea.
The last kilometres enter Baiona along the seafront, with the castle of Monterreal, now a parador, closing the bay, and the replica of the caravel Pinta in the harbour, a reminder that the first news of America arrived here. Baiona has everything and is one of the pleasantest towns on the Camino.
Tips
Fill your bottle in Mougás before the climb: on the way round Cape Silleiro there is nothing until Baredo.
Climb the cape in the cool of the morning; the track is wide and easy, but without shade and with wind.
The road sections between Oia and Mougás are narrow: walk on the left and keep an eye on the cars.
In Baiona walk round the walls of Monterreal along the promenade: it is the best end to an evening on the Coastal route.
